Customised Lessons by Experienced Specialist Tutors
Are you an experienced teacher, graduate or specialist tutor looking for flexible one‑to‑one work? Personal Tutors is one of the UK’s longest‑established private tuition agencies, founded in 1970, working with tutors and families across England, Scotland and Wales. We introduce you to families and older students looking for individual support in school subjects and exams, including pupils at Primary, KS3, GCSE and A‑Level, while you remain self‑employed and in control of your work. Our service is an exchange of information between tutors and prospective pupils, with all lesson arrangements agreed directly between you and the family.
Once our pre‑vetting checks are complete, we can start sending suitable pupil introductions based on your subjects, levels and location.

Customised Lessons by Experienced Specialist Tutors
Flexible, rewarding work
You choose the subjects and levels you teach, set your own hourly rate based on our recommended range, and fit lessons around your existing commitments. We introduce you to pupils; you decide which enquiries to accept and how you organise your work. All we ask is that you keep us updated on the outcome of each enquiry we send you.
Regular enquiries in core subjects
We receive enquiries from families across England, Scotland and Wales. Tutors offering Maths, English and Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) at Primary, KS3, GCSE and A‑Level tend to receive the highest number of introductions, though we also receive requests for many other subjects including French, German, History, Geography and Computer Science/ IT.
Face‑to‑face and online options
Most parents request face‑to‑face tuition in their own home or the tutor’s home, as many pupils benefit from the structure, focus and personal connection that in‑person learning can provide. Face‑to‑face lessons can also help build confidence and establish a clear routine, which many families value.
We do not register tutors who only offer online tuition; all tutors must be available for some local face‑to‑face work, with online lessons offered if requested by the pupil. Online lessons can be particularly helpful for older students, where travel is difficult, or where a more flexible schedule is needed.
You are always paid directly by the parent or adult learner for the tuition you provide. In line with employment agency regulations, the parent or adult learner pays the full lesson fee (which comprises the tutor's lesson fee and our small agency fee) to you, and you then the agency fee to us at the end of each month. This keeps payments simple, transparent and compliant, and the agency fee supports the administrative and safeguarding work we carry out in the background.
Free to join
There are no registration or subscription fees. Once you are approved, your tutor profile is added to our website and made available for pupil introductions.

Complete our short application form, telling us about your subjects, levels, qualifications, experience and availability.
We verify your identity, qualifications, references and Enhanced DBS certificate, along with any other checks we consider appropriate for safeguarding and compliance. Once checks are completed, your tutor profile is added to our website and made available for suitable pupil introductions.
When a pupil enquiry matches your subjects, levels and location (and, where relevant, online or face‑to‑face preferences), we email you the details so you can contact the family directly to discuss lessons. The enquirer will receive a similar email containing your details and may contact you.
You agree lesson arrangements, cancellation terms and fees directly with the parent or pupil. As a self‑employed tutor, you decide when and where you work and how many pupils you take on.

Do I need to be a qualified teacher?
No. Many of our tutors are qualified teachers, but we also welcome graduates and subject specialists with relevant experience and strong subject knowledge.
Can I offer online‑only tuition?
No. We do not currently accept applications from tutors who wish to offer online‑only tuition. Most parents look for face‑to‑face tuition, and we therefore require tutors to be available for some local in‑person work. Many tutors do offer a mixture of online and in‑person lessons, which can be particularly helpful for older students or where travel is difficult. You can indicate your preferences when you apply, including whether you are also happy to provide some online support.
How many pupils will I be introduced to?
This varies by subject, level and location. Tutors in core subjects such as Maths, English and Science often receive regular introductions, while more specialised subjects may receive fewer, more occasional requests, but there are also typically fewer tutors offering these subjects in each area.
Can I choose my own hourly rate?
Yes. As a self‑employed tutor, you set your own hourly rate. We provide a recommended fee range for different levels and locations to help you choose a realistic and sustainable rate.
What is the agency fee and how does it work?
We do not charge any tutor registration or subscription fees, and we do not charge the tutor an agency fee. The parent or student pays the full lesson fee (which includes the tutor's lesson fee and our small agency fee) to you after each lesson, and you then forward the agency fee to us at the end of each month.. This keeps payments simple and transparent for everyone. Full details of the agency fee and recommended fee ranges are provided in each introduction email to both tutor and pupil.
Are tutors UK‑based?
Yes. We only register tutors who are resident in the UK and eligible to work here. Having UK‑based tutors allows us to carry out our usual vetting and safeguarding checks effectively and gives us confidence that tutors understand the education systems and expectations within England, Scotland and Wales.
How long are lessons and how often do they take place?
Most lessons are usually 60 minutes once a week, but this can vary. You agree on lesson length and frequency directly with the parent or pupil. Some families may request longer or more frequent sessions, especially in the run‑up to exams.
Do I need to register as self‑employed for tax purposes?
Yes. As a tutor working with us, you are self‑employed and responsible for your own tax, National Insurance and record‑keeping. If you are unsure of your obligations, you may wish to seek advice from HMRC or a professional adviser.
What happens if a parent cancels a lesson?
You are free to set your own cancellation terms, provided these are clearly explained to families in advance. Many tutors operate a minimum notice period or charge a fee for late cancellations or missed lessons. Any such arrangements are agreed directly between you and the parent or pupil.
As Personal Tutors is legally classed as an Employment Agency, our payment arrangements follow employment agency legislation. The parent or student pays the tutor the full lesson fee (which includes the tutor’s lesson fee and the agency fee), and the tutor then forwards the agency fee they have collected to us. This structure is compliant, simple and transparent.
If you would like flexible, rewarding tutoring work with a well‑established UK agency, we would be delighted to receive your application.
